The story of Chartreuse Group stems from the resilience and passion of Kressoon Bokhoree, a humble tea grower who has passed on his dedication and entrepreneurial spirit to his successors.
A household name for tea in Mauritius, we are headquartered at Montée Lapeyre, Nouvelle France, a former hunting ground under French rule. The area was chosen in the mid-19th century by the British Governor, Sir John Pope Hennessy to revive tea cultivation in Mauritius.
While establishing a firm footprint in new business territories, our family enterprise has maintained a strong and durable emotional connection with tea production. Made from Camellia sinensis leaves, the rich flavours and powerful aromas of La Chartreuse tea have conquered nearly half of local market sales.
Kressoon Bokhoree took employment with La Chartreuse tea factory, then under British management, at the age of 13.
The Mauritian Government took over the factory located at La Grande Chartreuse from the British.
At 19 years old, Kressoon Bokhoree purchased his first plot of land stretching half an acre on 27 January to start his own tea plantation.
He implemented a diversification strategy and bought trucks to transport tea leaves produced by cooperatives to the former La Chartreuse factory.
He acquired some 30 acres of bare land at Nouvelle France and land already under tea cultivation granted by the government to expand his tea plantation business. In the late 1980s, his land holdings had reached about 100 arpents.
